Breithorn is a great little training and acclimatisation climb above the Zermatt-Cervinia in the Monte Rosa Area.
F | 800 m | 4-5 hrs |
The normal route, the SSW Flank, is an easy climb on 35 degree snow or ice. It is accessible by cable car, and therefore makes an enjoyable day climb for training and acclimatization. It also affords incredible views. From Cervinia we take the Plateau Rosa lift (actually a three lifts) to easily reach the Plateau Rosa glacier. From here we walk to the Breithorn Plateau, a high level area on the frontier between Switzerland and Italy. We rope up for the glacier travel across the plateau, then climb the snow and ice SSW face, arriving on the west ridge, not far from the summit.
